Alvin Lucier Still and Moving Lines (2014)
pogus
Ever Present; Carbon Copies; Hands; Shelter: Cat Hope (flute, alto flute, organ); Lindsay Vickery (saxophone, organ, MaxMSP programming); Stuart James (piano, organ); Malcolm Riddoch (electronic playback, MaxMSP performance, organ).
Pogus is absolutely delighted to offer this new release featuring Australian new music ensemble Decibel performing four works by Alvin Lucier, three of which are previously unrecorded. Ever Present (2002), the only work offered here that has been recorded before is considered by many to be Lucier’s most musical work. Carbon Copies(1989) investigates musicians imitating their environments. In Hands (1994) the performers use their hands to subtly alter the harmonics produced from the pipes of an organ. Shelter(1967) is for vibration pickups, amplification system and enclosed space and finds Lucier offering the sounds of outside a performance space. All these works as always are amazing examples of Alvin Lucier’s fertile mind and exploring, experimental sensibility. One of the true originals.

As one of the very few groups within Australia to focus solely on 20th Century or commissioned works, Decibel's electro-acoustic palette explore tone and texture like many of the rock and electronic musicians associated with the hellosQuare label, approaching common ideas behind music and sound from the other side of the coin.

jazzcontinuum

Bread & Circuses was written for a proposed educational documentary dealing with my methods of composition and was first workshopped at the Royal Academy of Music, London, before being taken to Australia for this recording.
Oxford Palms was commissioned by Meltdown for first performance in Oxford, England. The composition was loosely inspired by the form of Wild Palms, a novel with two interlocking ideas written by William Faulkner, whose home town was Oxford, Missouri.

Jon Rose - The People's Music (2003)
ReR Megacorp

The People's Music (Violin Factory 2) is a wild surrealist fantasy featuring string orchestra and conductor along with the various and subtle rhythms of industrial process manufactured by three young Perth composers. Rose served as a second conductor for these "industrials," plus he performed live orchestral sampling and interactive accelerometer-driven string samples (this while conducting with Mao's embalmed left arm, which looked to me suspiciously like a pink plastic dish washing glove). An audience of over 700 had somehow assembled here in the middle of the outback to witness this improbable vision.
A Red Guard factory guide was perched above the orchestra on the sheep chute, saluting the agony and ecstasy of the thousands of violin makers in The People's Republic of China with Mao's stern words alternately in Chinese and English. Meanwhile, two videographers projected images onto the sheep shearing shed, a riveting mix of pre-filmed images of Chinese violin factory workers and the live string players. Counterpoint is obviously key to Rose, and this was evident in many small details, such as the portraits of individual string players which ran on rhythmic loops in conversation with the orchestral rhythms.
